Join Birders Every Wednesday at Huntington Beach State Park

Bring your field guides and binoculars to Huntington Beach State Park.

Every Wednesday, birders gather at one of South Carolina’s top areas for birding. Through Oct. 31, you can join them for a walk along the causeway. The freshwater and salt marshes are a haven for an array of birds.

Birds vary by season. But birding at Huntington Beach State Park, but you could see:

5 Things to Bring for a Birding Experience

1. Your Skills

Use this four-step approach to identifying birds:

  1. Judge the bird’s shape and size
  2. See its main color pattern
  3. Note its behavior
  4. Consider its habitat

2. Comfortable Shoes and A Good Hat

You don’t need bulky hiking boots. Lightweight sneakers or sturdy sandals will do. Consider rubber boots in case birding gets muddy. A baseball cap is a must; even better? A bucket hat to protect you more from the sun.

3. Binoculars

A nice pair doesn’t have to cost a fortune, either. You can find binoculars with exceptional brightness, color, and clarity for $150-$300. Consider a harness strap for freedom of movement.

4. The Right Clothes

Birding vests and cargo pants provide deep pockets for books, notebooks, and snacks! Choose subdued, natural colors or camouflage. Don’t wear white: Birds consider it a sign of danger.

5. Smartphone Telephoto Lenses

Zooming in on even the latest mobile phones might give you a good image. Increase your chances with these attachments. Most kits are easy to carry in a pocket, and some even come with a tripod.
