Pawleys Island is situated within the lowcountry coastal region of South Carolina and some of the most beautiful landscapes along the east coast. From shady wooded regions featuring canopies of coastal pines and live oaks to tranquil inlets and saltwater marshes, you have to experience all the beautiful nature trails available during your vacation to Pawleys Island.
Whether you travel on foot or by bike, there are numerous scenic trails for your enjoyment around the southern Grand Strand area and here are a few that you won’t want to miss during your next trip to Pawleys Island.
Measuring 3.5 miles, the Pawleys Island Loop is one of the most popular trails in the area, particularly for biking. The loop runs along Ocean Highway before circling around to the oceanfront Myrtle Avenue and taking you along the Pawleys Island coastline where travelers have enjoyed tranquil coastal vacations since the 1800s. You will enjoy tremendous views of saltwater inlets as you travel over causeways between Ocean Highway and Myrtle Avenue. Bring along a rod and some bait and feel free to cast a line out off one of the causeways during high tide for some great fishing!
Perhaps the most scenic walking trail along the Grand Strand, the 1.4 mile loop at Brookgreen Gardens takes you all around the picturesque grounds of one of the east coast’s premier botanical gardens. Stroll through tranquil landscapes shaded by moss-draped live oaks and peruse their phenomenal collection of garden sculptures as you make your way through the park.
The walking trails at Brookgreen Gardens also wind through their Lowcountry Zoo exhibit, where guests can view local wildlife species like river otters, whitetail deer, red foxes and bald eagles. Paid admission is required for entry to Brookgreen Gardens, but this is truly one of the can’t-miss venues along the Grand Strand.
Located just north of Pawleys Island, Huntington Beach State Park features three miles of walking trails situated in coastal forests extending down to the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean. Huntington Beach State Park is also home to Atalaya Castle, the former winter home of the founders of Brookgreen Gardens, Archer and Anna Huntington.
On top of the great walking trails and historic landmarks, Huntington Beach State Park is considered the best birdwatching area in the state of South Carolina, so you’re likely to witness a wide variety of avian species including osprey, herons and even bald eagles in select times of year.
In addition to these areas, there are plenty of other great parks and trails to explore around the surrounding Grand Strand like Myrtle Beach State Park and the Hulk bike and fitness trail in Carolina Forest. But to enjoy all that Pawleys Island has to offer you need to book today!
