The Hammock Shops in Pawleys Island
The Hammock Village is one of the area’s most treasured landmarks. It is said that the Hammocks date back to the late 1800’s where making and selling of the hammocks was began by South Carolinian, Joshua John Ward. Legend has it, that he got the idea from sailors that talked about hammocks that were originated in Central America. Mr. Ward realized that he would not be able to travel to Central America to his get his own hammock, so he figured out how to weave the cotton to make one for himself.
After more and more people realized it is one of the best ways to enjoy a hot summer Carolina night, Mr. Ward began making them for people around the entire region. And that is where it all started.
In the early 1930’s the Hammock Shops grew into 20 specialty shops and restaurants all clustered beneath moss-draped oaks that are surrounded by beautiful gardens of azaleas and camellias.
Throughout the shops were homemade hammocks, rocking chairs and benches so you could pause, relax and enjoy your day.
When visiting the Hammock Shops today, you will still be greeted with the moss covered oak trees and the fresh blooms of azaleas and camellias just like many years ago. With over 24 shops and restaurants it is best to plan an entire afternoon for your visit. The shops range from fine clothing, jewelry, collectible art, Christmas Store and amazing beach souvenirs to name a few.
If you are hungry, no worries, you can stop in and grab a bite to eat at the newly opened, Nosh Restaurant. You can dine either outside on their covered deck, or inside where you can still see original bricks on the floors from the 1800’s. If you want something less filling, you may want to try Roz’s Rice Mill Café. They have a wonderful lunch and dinner menu.
Before you head back, make sure you stop by the Original Hammock Shop. There you will be able to see exactly how a hammock is made and you can feel the history with every twist and weave. Who knows, you may decide to take one home for yourself to enjoy and remember the fond memories of your Myrtle Beach vacation.
