Fun Facts About Valentine’s Day

  • Roman Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14 to be Valentine’s Day, but it wasn’t equated with romance until the Middle Ages. The English and French believed birds began their mating season on Feb. 14.
  • Necco began stamping red messages on its candy hearts after the Civil War ended. These enduring candies are favorites today.
  • Thousands send letters for Juliet, of the tragedy “Romeo and Juliet,” to Verona, Italy, for Valentine’s Day. The Juliet Club answers each letter from the city host the Shakespearean work.

4 Driving Ranges in Litchfield and Pawleys Island to Try

4 Driving Ranges in Litchfield and Pawleys Island to Try

If you want to lower your score, you can’t be lazy about your game. Even the pros spend time hitting balls without playing. Having a game plan when you arrive at the driving range will help you see dividends in this investment.

In Myrtle Beach, there are plenty of opportunities to play.

And plenty of opportunities to work on your game. We’ve put together a list of driving ranges you should know about. For your next getaway, square off time to take swings at one.

Do I Need to Go to the Driving Range?

Yes. Practice is key to any skill development, and driving balls is no different. It can show marked improvement in your:

  • Stance
  • Swing
  • Follow-through

It’s part of three activities you can do to keep your game sharp. Time on the course helps, but so too does a focus on driving range work and putting-green practice.

Tradition Golf Club

When playing a course this long, a practice facility is a great thing to have. You’ll find this course in excellent condition, with wide fairways — a nice spot for a couple to take in a round.  Ron Garl designed the layout on the site of a 500-year-old rice plantation.

DRIVING RANGE TIP: Start with the basics — your grip. It’s the genesis of every swing, and making it a focal point of driving range will help reinforce good habits.

tradition golf club

Steve Dresser Golf Academy

Schedule a morning session for instruction next time you’re in Myrtle Beach. You’ll discover subtleties in chipping, driving, and putting from the pros. They offer a session plus lunch package that’s recommended.

DRIVING RANGE TIP: Have a hook that plagues your game? Hit drives at half speed to discourage arm swings that move too fast.

Heritage Golf Club

There are 20 driving-range tees here, giving you the opportunity to let it fly before you tee up for real. This can be a challenging track, especially if you’re not true off the tee. It’s on the site of the former True Blue and Midway plantations, an elegant, 18-hold golf experience.

DRIVING RANGE TIP: Start with shorter clubs. After the sand and pitching wedge, work toward longer ones. From wedges, move to 8-irons, 5-irons, hybrids, fairway woods, then your driver.

heritage golf

Willbrook Plantation

There’s a range at this course, a Dan Maples and Michael Gleason design. Willbrook also has a putting green, which is a nice one-two combination of a warmup before your round. This course is popular with women, and players of all skill levels.

DRIVING RANGE TIP: Don’t skip the warmup to driving. Stretch your arms, back, hamstrings, neck, and quads before you take a swing.

Not all courses in the area offer practice ranges, but when you play one that does, it pays to arrive early. Plus, you’ll get extra time with your clubs on Grand Strand courses. It’s tough to find anything negative about that!

Fun Beach Games For Your Next Pawleys Island Vacation

Family on Beach

Fun Beach Games For Your Next Pawleys Island Vacation

We know that you can’t wait for your next vacation to Pawleys Island! After all, this coastal Carolina paradise has some of the most breathtaking beaches along the eastern seaboard! And if you’re travelling with some little ones, we all know that it can’t hurt to have some fun games and activities lined up for them during your day at the beach. And remember, there’s no age limit on having fun, so here are a few great beach games to enjoy on your next Pawleys Island vacation.

Family on Beach

Musical Towels

We’ve all played musical chairs, so you can probably see where this one is going, but there’s sure to be fun times (and hilarious video) when you combine good music with family competition. Simply lay out your beach towels, have someone spin your favorite beach jams on their smartphone or speaker and when the music stops, the last person not on a towel is eliminated. Since everyone is on sand, the game will get a unique spin, with players trying to find their footing and making acrobatic dives to try to stay in the match.

Scavenger Hunts

A scavenger hunt along the beach is a fantastic way to occupy the attention spans of kids, challenging them to locate and document various things they might spot along the coast. The list can be as long or short as you wish, and things on it can range from pelicans to Frisbees to someone wearing a yellow swimsuit doing the Macarena. OK, you may not want to get that specific, or if you’re really trying to pose a challenge, have at it! You can also make it a collector’s scavenger hunt by having contestants gather various color seashells, pebbles, driftwood or other beach findings.

Sand Pictionary

We all know kids love to doodle, and what could be more fun than drawing on the beach with the sand as your canvas? For a fun beach-themed version of the classic game Pictionary, simply jot down a bunch of different drawing ideas on scraps of paper and toss them in a hat. Ideas can be anything you like, but since you’re on the beach you can’t go wrong with sea-centric figures like dolphins, surfers and sailboats. The first drawer chosen grabs a topic and will have a minute to create a picture while the others in the game will try to correctly guess what it is. If the picture is guessed, the drawer can grab another topic and keep going until time is up. The drawer gets one point for each picture that the group guesses correctly, and play rotates after each person’s turn. In between rounds of splashing in the surf, this is sure to be a great way to pass the time while on the beach!

We’re sure that these activities are sure to be a hit during your beach days on your upcoming vacation to Pawleys Island. And if for some reason you haven’t made plans for a Pawleys Island vacation, what are you waiting for? Summer is here and The Litchfield Company is here to help you book fantastic vacation accommodations at leading Pawleys Island resorts like Litchfield Beach and Golf Resort, Pawleys Plantation and True Blue Resort. When you’re planning your next vacation to Pawleys Island be sure to pack your clubs and book a tee time (or five) at one of these fantastic Pawleys Island golf courses.

Caledonia Golf and Fish Club

Hailed as one of the finest public courses in the entire US, Caledonia has delighted golfers far and wide since its opening back in 1994. Legendary course architect Mike Strantz created a masterpiece out of the Lowcountry landscape and the former grounds of rice plantations, featuring sprawling live oaks and vibrant annual and semiannual blooms. Both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest have featured Caledonia on their annual top 100 public courses lists. After the turn be sure to stop by the shack between the 9th and 10th holes for a free cup of their famous seafood chowder. Packed with southern charm and world class course design, Caledonia is an absolute must play course on your Pawleys Island golf vacation!

True Blue Golf Club

After playing the first Mike Strantz golf course along the Grand Strand, you’re sure to leave ready for another crack at his unparalleled course architecture. Luckily True Blue Golf Club is here to make that happen! This magnificent course opened in 1998 and poses golfers with a 7,126 yard layout that is equal parts challenging and rewarding. True Blue has found itself listed prominently on Golf Magazine’s list of top 100 public courses in the US. Strantz’s trademark design capitalizes on the coastal Lowcountry landscape of Pawleys Island, with natural saltwater marshes, native grasses and live oaks coming into play on many holes. Be sure to prepare for the challenge of True Blue on their fantastic practice range, as all rounds come with unlimited range balls to get ready.

Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club

Why is Pawleys Plantation a can’t miss course during your vacation? Does the name Jack Nicklaus mean anything to you? The Golden Bear supervised the design of Pawleys Plantation, sculpting this 7,026 yard course among saltwater inlets just inland from the Atlantic Ocean. As golfers continue their round, gentle (and sometimes not-so-gentle) sea breezes leave coastal grasses dancing in the wind and demand accuracy to avoid water and devilishly-placed bunkers. Since opening in 1988, Pawleys Plantation has been a frequent mention on top public course lists from Golf World and a four-star review from Golf Digest.

Heritage Plantation

Hailed as the #7 golf course in South Carolina by GolfWeek Magazine, Heritage Plantation is one of the finest representatives of what coastal Carolina golf courses have to offer. Architect Dan Maples designed this 7,116 yard course, showcasing centuries-old live oaks, lush magnolia trees, freshwater lakes and saltwater marshes that ensure your round will be a memorable one. Water features creep into play heavily throughout the course, especially on the back nine, as a daunting three hole stretch on 12, 13 and 14 leads to a remarkable par 5 18th hole. Be sure to grab a bite to eat and a post-round cocktail at the clubhouse, regarded as one of the most visually stunning along the Grand Strand.

Drone of Heritage Golf Course Hole 13

River Club

With a name like River Club, you might expect water to come into play, and that’s exactly what architect Tom Jackson had in mind when he conceived this par 72, 6,700 yard course. The River Club will challenge your accuracy as water comes into play in 14 of 18 holes. Jackson also placed over a hundred bunkers throughout the course, demanding careful shot selection and rewarding well-placed shots. Golf Digest awarded River Club 4.5 stars, and we’re sure you will also thoroughly enjoy a round or two at this fantastic Pawleys Island course.

On top of these tremendous golf courses, dozens upon dozens of other great courses will be within a short drive during your golf vacation to the Grand Strand.
