Set Sail with the Wooden Boat Show in Georgetown, SC

The 24th annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show will float into historic Georgetown, S.C., Oct. 18-19. The show is more than just a celebration of wooden boats, it’s also a chance to explore the maritime history of the region, which is especially important in Georgetown, where the Black, Great Pee Dee, Sampit and Waccamaw rivers all empty into Winyah Bay.

The Wooden Boat Show kicks off with the Goat Island Yacht Club Regatta, held at the SC Maritime Museum. Proceeds from the $85 tickets benefit the museum, and will get you delectable cuisine and drinks, as well as the opportunity to bid on live and silent auctions.

The show itself is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 19. Admission is free, and you’ll have the opportunity to peruse more than 100 wooden boats, which will be displayed along the boardwalk, on Georgetown’s Front Street, and on the water. You can meet and talk to the craftsmen and owners who will show off a range of boats from kayaks to yachts.

It’s a great event for kids, who will be able to participate in children’s model boatbuilding and test the seaworthiness of their boats on a pond on Front Street. There will also be knot tying demonstrations and a change to test your knot tying skills in a “Six Knot Challenge.” Visitors will also be able to take a spin on the New Charleston Mosquito Fleet, boats from a Charleston-based organization that gives inner-city kids involved in boating and boat-building. Mosquito fleet trips run from noon to 4 p.m., with each row taking about 45 minutes.

A boatbuilding competition will begin at noon, with two-person teams taking on the challenge to build a rowing skiff by 4 p.m. Following the race to build will be a test of the skiffs, with a rowing relay across the Sampit River.

The show will also be a great place to peruse arts and crafts, enjoy live music, food and drinks. And it all takes place in Georgetown, a mere 25 minute drive from Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort—food, maritime history and fun, sounds worth the trip if you ask us!
